Sodium bisulphate is a solid in the form of a white powder. Sodium bisulphate is mainly used to acidify solutions. It is also used in metal treatment, as part of the pickling solution, which is used to remove the oxide layer that forms when the metal surface is heated. In swimming pools it is used to reduce the pH of the water (necessary for the effectiveness of chlorine). Approved by AAFCO as a general purpose food additive. Sodium bisulphate generates sulphuric acid in aqueous solution and was therefore historically used as a main compound in some cleaning products.
