The Aluminium Sulphateis a chemical product with the formula Al2(SO4)3. It is in the form of a white granular powder. One of its main uses is as a flocculant in the treatment of algae in swimming pools. A flocculant is a product that attracts particles suspended in water and precipitates them, thus enabling their removal by suction, filtration or sweeping.
PARTICLE REMOVAL PROCESS IN WATER
Both for the preparation of the pool in summer and for the daily maintenance of the pool it is necessary to remove algae, micro-organisms and impurities that are generated in the pool water. These can be seen in particular when the pool turns green, which is characteristic of a multiplication of algae in the pool.
ALGAE REMOVAL IN CASE OF GREEN WATER
If the water is green, this means that there are algae and micro-organisms in the water. The removal of algae and micro-organisms is carried out by a biocidethat would literally kill these micro-organisms and a flocculant which allows them to be precipitated and easily removed. One of the most commonly used biocides is copper sulphate pentahydrate. In this section you can see how to apply copper sulphate in swimming poolsWe summarise them here:
- Distribute the copper sulphate according to the adequate dose (the dosage of copper sulphate is: 10 grams per m3 of water)
- Circulate the water for 1-2 hours and then let it stand for several hours.
- The next day add aluminium sulphate which will act as a flocculant. The aluminium sulphate will attract the solid particles that cause the turbidity of the water and they will precipitate to the bottom of the pool.
- The Aluminium Sulphate dosage in water is 10 grams per m3 of water. It should be diluted in water before being poured into the pool and well dissolved. Given the size of the pools, with hundreds of m3 of water, the dissolved aluminium sulphate will be poured all around the pool.
- Leave to stand and act for at least 2 hours.
- Clean the impurities that have settled on the bottom of the pool with a pool hoover.
- Recirculate the pool water.
- Measure the pH of the water and the chlorine level, and check that all values are correct.
CLOUDY/BLACKENED WATER
If the water is yellowish, blackened, it is possible that the turbidity is caused by an excess of iron or organic manganese. In this case, before applying the flocculant, the following should be applied chlorine disinfectant.
- Apply 10 gr. per m³ of granulated chlorine, this application should be done only once.
- Apply water circulation for 24 hours.
- Stop re-circulation
- Add 10 gr. per m³ of aluminium sulphate. The way to add the aluminium sulphate is to dissolve it in water beforehand. It will be applied little by little all around the pool.
- Wait 2 hours or more, in particular until the impurities precipitate to the bottom.
- Clean impurities from the bottom with a pool hoover.
- Activate the filter and water circulation.
- Measure the pH of the water and the chlorine level, and check that all values are correct.
SLIGHTLY CLOUDY WATER
If you only want to act against turbidity in the pool water, then only apply aluminium sulphate directly into the pool.
Aluminium sulphate is also used to water purification.
